Doers of the Small Things

You are a world changer. Yes, you.
You, the one who can barely write a grocery list and will never write a book.
You, who still have a pile of laundry on the floor from two weeks ago and now you don’t remember what is clean and what’s dirty.
You, who vaguely remember what it’s like to actually go out and buy something that you want for yourself because all the money goes to bills and your children.
It’s you.
You are the one changing the world.
Maybe not in big ways that everyone will see and notice and that will gain you awards or promotions, and maybe not in ways that will get you a pat on the back from someone else...
But yes, it’s you.
When you choose to give a smile to the cashier at the grocery store who looks weary around the eyes,
When you choose to move the laundry from the washer to the dryer so your husband has clean work clothes for tomorrow,
When you let your child with a permit drive even though you are in a hurry,
When you take a moment when you are tired to listen to your husband’s story, leaving the dishes in the sink,
When you read one more story before bed when all you want is a bath...
You are changing the world.
How do I know this?
Because Jesus said this after he washed the disciples’ feet, “I’ve laid down a pattern for you. What I’ve done, you do. I’m only pointing out the obvious. A servant is not ranked above his master; an employee doesn’t give orders to the employer. If you understand what I’m telling you, act like it- and live a blessed life.” John 13:14-15
This is what changes the world- servanthood in the smallest of ways, ways that won’t win awards or increase your bank account, but they change the lives of the ones you choose over yourself.
And choosing others over yourself is the essence of the Gospel, the Truth of the ultimate World Changer.
Love to you, world changers, quiet servants, doers of the small things...they matter, and so do you.
"Everybody can be great...because anybody can serve.” Martin Luther King, Jr.
Blessings,
Shay Kemp
